Other Physical Traits.
rafayel is a merman, and can transform at will though he does it very rarely. sea god / merman form can be found here. his scales glow and stand up in moments of intense emotion.

BACKGROUND
rafayel comes from an underwater society of merpeople, who created an utopian society far away from the prying eyes and greedy hands of humans. many worshipped the sea god, the leader of leumrian society and ruler of the tides, sacrificing women and children in order to quell the god's rage and provide smooth waters and ample resources.
rafayel was the last in line of his people to become the sea god, a being that revealed prophecies and maintained lemuria's underwater sun. however, he takes no real joy in his role- finding it to be stifling and uninteresting. but rafayel is nothing if not loyal and cares deeply for his people. despite his childhood rebellion and snide comments about his fate he takes his job very seriously and worries constantly for his people. however, in the end rafayel chooses love over his people, effectively dooming his society in an effort to save the one he loved. all of it was fruitless in the end, but despite it all he can't deny the pull his beloved has over him. he is doomed to chase her across every universe, despite the pain and guilt that comes from their love. leumurians live to love, for better or for worse.
Personality.
he's a funny little guy.
but in all seriousness, rafayel is a multi-faceted being who has manufactured many facades with sharp corners to protect himself. in the comfort of friends he can come off as stubborn, chidlish, clingy and surly. he has pretty awful abandonment issues, so when in the company of people whose presences he craves these more immature aspects of his personality jump out.
but for those who don't know him (critics, members of the press, even fans of his work) he comes off as aloof. despite how ridiculous he is willing to be in the presence of a loved one he's actually incredibly introverted. he hates crowds and unwanted attention (which is basically attention from most people he doesn't know). it gives him the reputation of being mysterious, and he kind of is - he's deeply guarded even with people he cares about. it's often difficult to understand what's going on his head but having the patience to try and understand him is something that isn't lost on him.
rafayel and the sea god are two halves of one whole, and the man rafayel often shows fear of what will happen as rafayel the sea god makes himself more and more present. he's lived for a very long time and has a very good sense of who he is and what he wants, but just because he knows who he is doesn't mean he's entirely comfortable with showing it.
